Guest Article: The Law of New Thought Pt 2 by Gina Magee

In Part 1, we discussed the basic concepts related to New Thought from William Walker Atkinson's book, The Law Of The New Thought.
Subsequent chapters discuss these concepts in more detail. The first principle put forth is that "Thoughts are Things." Everything has an energy or a vibrational frequency, including our thoughts. When we have a thought, we are putting that thought into motion. And according to Atkinson, these thought vibrations can vibrate at a lesser or greater intensity depending on the force of your original thought. As a result, "we are constantly sending forth thought influence, and are constantly receiving thought waves from others."
This is important because like attracts like. If we are thinking hateful thoughts, we will attract the hateful thoughts of others to ourselves and become more hateful. However, when we move past our negative thoughts and think loving thoughts we will attract more loving thoughts back to ourselves.
Since we are constantly surrounded by a "thought aura," we are attracted or repelled by others just by being within their thought aura. We can see examples of this with children, through their unexplainable likes and dislikes, because they are very susceptible to our thought auras.
Atkinson tells us that we need not worry about being unduly affected by the thoughts of others. When you are thinking good thoughts, you will "receive only the helpful vibrations corresponding to the thoughts uppermost in your own mind."
We all have control over our own minds. Nothing else will enter our minds unless we let it. Our own internal influence is stronger than external influences. In other words, "If he thinks Love, Hate will not come near him; if he thinks Truth, Lying thoughts will flee from him."
Our minds are like magnets drawing in all thoughts that are in sync with our own conscious and unconscious thoughts and desires. When we develop a positive mental attitude, we draw in the best of all thoughts.
I know that thinking positively is sometimes easier said than done. However, if we remain mindful, it gets easier with time. One of my favorite teachings on this subject comes from Eckhart Tolle. He encourages us to "be aware." There is an amazing power in awareness. We cannot control the thoughts that pop into our minds, but we can stop and acknowledge that negative thought. This acknowledgement helps to break through thought patterns that no longer serve us.
And in the spirit of synchronicity, I saw a post from Eckhart Tolle yesterday that embodies the concepts of awareness and being in the present moment.
‎"Sometimes a thought has a magnetic pull, as if it wants more of your consciousness. It wants to grow, because it's a little entity. It wants attention and it tries to get it in subtle ways. It might even use a bodily feeling. "I'm hungry suddenly." Then presence is gone, and you're gone, looking for a restaurant in your mind..."
In the words of Mike Dooley, "Thoughts are things. Choose the good ones."
